About Spirit Moves
Dance
Philosophy
The
philosophy of Spirit Moves Dance is based on the principles of Kripalu
yoga, which focus on being present in your body, learning to love and
nurture it, and honouring its needs and limitations without self-criticism
-modifying movements and poses as needed
(Faulds,
Richard. Kripalu Yoga: A Guide to Practice On and Off the Mat.
New York: Bantam Dell, 2005)
While valuing and drawing inspiration from many
formal dance traditions, Spirit Moves Dance does not teach dance technique.
Instead, Spirit Moves operates on the principle that deep down we already
know how to dance, and offers experiences to connect clients with the
dance that comes from inside. Classes such as Creative Dance may present
exercises from various dance techniques, but the focus is always on
taking that information into the body and exploring how it feels, instead
of seeing it as "right" or "wrong."
As such, Spirit Moves classes complement any formal dance studies while
remaining accessible to clients with no prior dance training. Instead
of seeking perfection of technique, Spirit Moves Dance guides clients
in the discovery of perfection already present within. Without exception
we are perfect just as we are: capable of perfect joy, perfect freedom,
perfect love, perfect abandon. Dance class is a place to nurture ourselves
and celebrate this wonderfully human condition!
